News:

Release of the final Firehouse Fraternity book.

Without your interest and support over the past 5 years, it would not have been possible to reach this point.  Beginning with the first interview, the oral history project that led to the books spanned two decades.

It would be great to continue with the oral history project and bring it forward to the present (the last entrance exam recounted in the present series of books was taken in 1977), but life can be capricious.  Although I can't promise if or when another book will be published, I'm still going to do my best to continue the work of preserving the history of our department.

I hope you have enjoyed the books and the memories they preserve as much as I have enjoyed the company of Newark's bravest over the past 33 years.

While the sales of these books can support this website, they will be available here.  This is the most economical way to offer them to you.  When this is no longer the case, we will look into other ways to make the books available.

New Book:
  Changing the NFD

Change is the theme of this final book of the Firehouse Fraternity series.  The more than 60 years discussed by the men included in this series of books were filled with constant change, some of it embraced, some of it fought for, and some of it resisted.  But all of it was inevitable.

Changes in ethnicity and race brought about friction.  Demand for better wages caused the only strike in the history of the NFD.  Changes in technology and generations were constant, causing the evolution of the department into its present form.

Each generation became accustomed to the department they were appointed to, yet knew the department they had retired from was radically different in so many ways.

Was it still a career these men would recommend, even with all the changes? . . . See more on the "Books" page.
