The men who fought the fires and dealt with the rage of the inner city in July 1967 use their own words to recount their experiences. In Volume V, Riots to Renaissance, Newark firefighters tell a story of extraordinary courage and pain as they witness their city torn apart by violence and flames.
The size and frequency of the fires only grew as Newark descended into a social chaos which it did not begin to emerge from until the mid-80s. The title of America's Renaissance city was still controversial twenty years after that. Follow the NFD as it fought an ever increasing number of fires with fewer and fewer companies and members. . .
