Welcome to Springfield and Hunterdon Publishing, the publishing house of the Newark Fire Department Oral History Project.

Goal of the Project:

Begun in June 1991, the goal of the Newark Fire Department Oral History Project is to record the views and experiences of members of the Newark, New Jersey Fire Department. The period of focus is 1942 to 2003.  Some of the topics discussed are growing up in Newark, becoming a fireman, everyday life in the firehouse, and experiences on the fire scene.

Without your interest and support these books would not have been possible.  Beginning with the first interview, the oral history project that led to the books spanned two decades.

It would be great to continue with the oral history project and bring it forward to the present (the last entrance exam recounted in the present series of books was taken in 1977), but life can be capricious.  Although I can't promise if or when another book will be published, I'm still going to do my best to continue the work of preserving the history of our department.

I hope you have enjoyed the books and the memories they preserve as much as I have enjoyed the company of Newark's bravest over the past 36 years.

While the sales of these books can support this website, they will be available here.  This is the most economical way to offer them to you.  When this is no longer the case, we will look into other ways to make the books available.

Springfield and Hunterdon Publishing was started for the sole purpose of preserving the experiences of Newark's bravest and through them the history of the Newark Fire Department by publishing works based on the Oral History Project.

Thank you for your continued interest.
